2025 HERD COMPETITION
This year's winning herd: The Speckles Herd
Albion Cattle Society Herd Competition.
Results: September, 2025.
Judges: Mr John Ball & Ms Lynn Parks.
Having been fortunate to have judged different breed societies herd competitions as well as the Cheshire Farms Society herd class all of which are judged “in the flesh” so to speak. To judge the Albion herd competition with just photographic evidence makes it very different and a somewhat difficult task to compare.
We would like to thank ALL entrants for their photos, videos and written submissions, they were very interesting to look at and to read the thoughts of breeders going forward into the future.
We feel all members and breeders of the society should be congratulated on the fact that they have played a part in saving the Albion breed from extinction and the future for the breed looks far more assured. Most of the entrants this year seem to be in less favoured areas and with the breed hopefully qualifying for the supplement on conservational grazing, it certainly makes the Albion breed better suited than some breeds to go on and perform
well.
Going through the entries we were looking for animals that were true to breed type as much as possible i.e. angularity, length & size with good legs and we had to assume good feet.

1st place – Speckles herd
One of the oldest Albion herds to date and therefore has had the opportunity to breed cattle that are true to type. There are some very good older cows that were proving the point of the breeds longevity characteristic.

We found it very difficult to split the next two entrants so we came to the conclusion that we would award a joint 2nd place.
Joint 2nd place – Leam herd & Scoutbeck herd
Leam herd – A relatively young herd in the making but what was most impressive was that the breeder had a very definite type of animal he wanted the herd to consist of. This was very evident in the foundation stock that were purchased initially and we were very
impressed with the vision for the future.

Scoutbeck herd – Virtually the mother herd of all. A large herd, we were very impressed with the young stock that were shown, the potential for them going forward hopefully should be very good; of course you do not get good young stock without the more mature
animals are of true type.
Honourable mention
Hollow Green - Two very stylish heifers, hopefully with a long future ahead of them.

Knowlton herd – A large group of animals in the video some of which looked well worthy of a closer look, certainly looks lots of potential going forward. It was pleasing to see pictures of the two bulls the society are hoping to take semen from.

Far Laithe herd – A smart mother & daughter pairing in “Ivy & Pearl”.

Representing the Speckles herd, Susannah Mannerings was awarded the Royal Agricultural Society of England cup, originally awarded for the best female Albion at the Royal Show at the Open Weekend in Norfolk, with special rosettes awarded for the runners ups.
